Neil Diamond’s Captain Of A Shipwreck tells a comforting story of Source Presence having my back – come what may.
When I first listened to this song, it sounded very depressing. One tragedy after another. Then I realized its message: Regardless how bad things are – I’m here. I have your back! When I think about it, that is when I want it most!
Indeed, someone having my back is most meaningful “IF” my world crashes or stops!
For me, that’s when I want to know my back is covered!
That’s what Diamond’s story is about: “IF” you’re captain of a shipwreck; “IF” your gold mine comes up empty; Source Presence is there to comfort you.
This is my story of the Universe, Source Presence, alerting me and how I became aware of these alerts.
It was Cinco de Mayo. My family and I arrived early to see Brooks and Dunn, David Ball and The Tractors perform at Dallas Fair Park’s outdoor amphitheatre. Seats were first come first serve so we arrived early. On the left side is the amphitheatre with parking on the right separated by a lower road going between the 2.
We were among the first to arrive. I carefully chose a parking space close to the amphitheatre. The parking lot was on an approximate 30-degree slant. Parking was wide open so I parked close, at the bottom of the slant. We were excited and looking forward to the performances, especially The Tractors. Their song Baby Likes To Rock It had us rocking.
As we started walking to the amphitheatre, a little voice spoke to me, questioning where I had parked. Asking me: Was I certain about where I parked? Yes, I thought it’ll be easy to leave when we were ready and brushed it off. It, the voice, wasn’t so sure and alerted me again. Really? Did I really want to park there?
We were looking forward to a fun-filled outing and I impatiently dismissed it.
Looking back, despite the alerts extensive track record of warning me to change, I hadn’t yet learned to respond to the Universe’s warning. But, when it cautioned me a second time, I didn’t fully understand why but I moved the car. Following my intuition, although it felt peculiar and I didn’t understand why, I parked at the other end of the rows – at the top.
We proceeded to the concert area and picked out good lawn seats and were enjoying ourselves immensely when a severe thunderstorm unexpectedly burst open on us. The announcer told everyone to come under the structure closer to the stage, we couldn’t get to our cars, the water was too deep at the crux of the parking lot.
When it was finally clear to leave, as we walked to our car, we saw cars that parked where we originally did had floated away. Some were suspended in the forks of trees. Others had rammed each other.
Our car, which I had begrudgingly moved, was dry and waiting for us, where now I was – so grateful.
[Sidebar: In my defense, like learning most new skills, there’s often a time lag between learning to connect the dots, even when one is fully aware and intentional in the skill adoption process. I’ve come to think of these signals as very subtle gestures to alert me to make a change. Similar to my car’s headlight-on buzzer. It’s subtle and it took a few times before I immediately recognized what it was telling me. In the same way, Universe warnings are very subtle. But with practice, I have learned to pay attention and respond accordingly whenever they occur. I have found that duly responding to an alert is similar to watching falling dominoes play out but at the pivotal moment instead of the unfolding misfortune occurring – my aptly responding to the warning is similar to picking up the next domino. Events alter. What was expected to happen next – doesn’t!
This is important and bears repeating: Each time I’m alerted, I have a choice. I can dismiss it or I can “catch it,” aptly respond and stop the domino from falling. So can you.]
I’ve had many experiences clearly demonstrate I am given what I need. Some experiences are where I ask and receive here, and here. Conversely, others here, and here are where I later realize that what happened, although I cursed it at the time, was exactly what I needed to happen.
Have you experienced this?
If not, it’s likely you will. Or like in my above story, did you not notice or catch it and let it slip by? A suggestion to the wise, as you practice catching it, have fun with it. Make it a game and be grateful. Give “Thanks” for it. Whatever we give our energy to, especially with gratitude, increases.
If yes, it’s not just you and me. It happens all the time. People the world over routinely experience it as a premature baby born on a flight documents and a passenger survived a Mexico City subway crash documents. Each of us, everyone everywhere, we are loved and we are given what we need, including alerts to impending adversities.
It’s up to us to learn how and when to respond.
If you want to know more, ask me.
Until Next Time,
Joe

P.S.
I’ve found that by seeing mishaps, adversities and, “Oops” as pop-tests empower me. They transform to an opportunity to confirm my progress – strut my stuff! When I “pass my test,” I gain confidence. Conversely, if I don’t “pass,” I know exactly what to practice so I pass it next time. This has repeatedly shown itself to be a very helpful and effective strategy in my building and assimilating skills.
